Module 01 Discussion Board 01b

Module 01 Discussion Board 01b

Q Assignment Overview This discussion board gives you a chance to think about your goals for the class and how your success are assessed. These reflections are crucial. You will come back to them at the end of the semester, and since we are using a grading system that differed from what you may have encountered, thinking about those differences and any challenges they are going to pose is worthwhile. Remember, discussion board assignments have two parts--a post and a response. Time Commitment This assignment should take between 45 - 60 minutes. This includes the time to write the post and the two responses. Post (Your post has four parts.) 1. Write a paragraph telling something about yourself that you are proud of. Or share a story about yourself that you like to tell. 2. Write a paragraph talking about if you see growth mindset being useful to you in our class and why or why not. 3. Write a paragraph in which you compare Kohn's ideas about the problem of grades with your own experience? How accurate do you find his analysis? How do you see grades helping or hindering your growth mindset? 4. Identify one goal you have for this class in at least one paragraph. Describe your goal in two sentences. Begin your first sentence with "I've noticed that my writing [name an issue in your writing.]" Begin your second sentence with "I plan to work on [fill in the skill or attribute of writing that will improve the issue] by [give specific actions or goals.] Response You will need to write two responses to two different classmates. For each classmate, write a one-paragraph response to their response to Dweck's ideas in the last paragraph of their post. Specifics • You must submit at least three submissions to this discussion board. • At least one of those three posts must engage with a classmate’s ideas. • The third post can continue your point or respond to a student, you may continue your discussion with the student you've already responded to or engage a new classmate. • All posts must offer a path for developing the classes’ discussion of brainology. • Posts that only summarize Dweck’s argument will not count. Module Learning Objectives • review and assess the relevance of Dweck’s theory of growth mindset to your learning; • review and discuss the arguments against traditional grading; • reflect on your goals for the class. Grading As we discussed in the syllabus, your grade on the assignment will be determined by the discussion board rubric. You can access it by clicking on the three vertical dots near the top of your screen. (Please see the video below for a quick tutorial.) You may revise and resubmit your discussion board posting and/or response until the module that contains it closes. Support Photo by Hans M on UnsplashLinks to an external site. 1. There are a couple of things I am proud of. For starters, I am a single mom of two kids, and I had my oldest at 18 years old. I have managed to do everything on my own and raise a couple pretty decent human beings all while working 2-3 jobs at a time and going to school. I definitely have days where I wonder how I manage to get through life but I just take each day at a time. I also love to work out and lift weights 6-7 days a week so that helps me get through the hard days. 2. I definitely think growth mindset is useful both in class and outside of class.
